What "Allahu Akbar" really means

The phrase “Allahu Akbar,” which means “God is greater” in Arabic, should be known as a celebration of life, not death and destruction, says Imam Omar Suleiman, the founder and president of the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research and an adjunct professor of Islamic Studies at Southern Methodist University, a private institution in the United States.

I will never forget the day a United States army veteran who had fought in Iraq embraced Islam at my former mosque in New Orleans. He arrived in his full uniform, and was overcome with emotion when he heard the congregation shout “Allahu Akbar” after he uttered the Islamic declaration of faith.

The army veteran never thought that the words that had terrified him in Iraq would be the very same that would welcome him to his new faith. They are words that he now uses in prayer.

Contrary to what many people seem to think, the words “Allahu Akbar” simply mean “God is greater.” It is a powerful declaration used by Muslims on many occasions and in many prayers. It is a celebration of life, the first words fathers whisper in the ears of their newborns. They are used to indicate gratitude when God bestows something upon you that you would have been incapable of attaining were it not for divine benevolence. It is a prayerful phrase that reminds us that, no matter what our concerns may be, God is greater than them.

Worshippers at a mosque in Quebec reportedly heard the phrase “Allahu Akhbar,” the very phrase they recite in morning prayers, uttered by their white supremacist attacker just before he opened fire and killed six Muslims this January. And Muslims at a mosque in Minnesota were reciting “Allahu Akbar” during their morning prayers when their mosque was firebombed this August.

Is “Allahu Akbar” sometimes used as a battle cry? Yes, though as Senator John McCain has argued on Fox News, that does not make the phrase itself abhorrent. While noting that “moderate Muslims” also say “Allahu Akbar,” McCain said the phrase is no more troubling that a Christian saying “Thank God.”

But the way “Allahu Akbar” often appears in the media seems to serve a nefarious agenda: to instil fear of anyone who utters the phrase and to raise concerns even about Islam itself. But a lone terrorist who shouts “Allahu Akbar” while murdering innocent people in the streets of New York does not get to own that term. Nor do those who declare that no further details are needed to determine motive once a man with a Muslim-sounding name perpetrates an attack using those words.

As Hassan Shibly, executive director of CAIR-Florida, said in response to the recent terror attack in New York, “That is the biggest act of heresy to shout God’s glorious name when committing the worst crime against God.”

Though these words that are used to celebrate life also sometimes accompany horrific acts, this is not a new phenomenon.

Of the greatest ironies noted by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), was the birth and death of Abdullah Ibn Az Zubayr.

Abdullah Ibn Az Zubayr was the first child born in the Muslim community after they had migrated to Medina from Mecca to escape persecution.

Some residents of Medina told Muslims that they had placed a spell on them that would prevent them from having children. When Abdullah was born, his grandfather Abu Bakr carried him through the streets as the crowd happily chanted “Allahu Akbar.”

When Abdullah was murdered by another group of Muslims as he stood for justice in Makkah, his murderers also chanted “Allahu Akbar.”

As one witness said, “I was there the day Abdullah was born, and I am here the day he has died, and I heard those who said Allahu Akbar the day he was born and I heard those who have said Allahu Akbar the day he has died, and I swear by Allah those who said Allahu Akbar the day when he was born were far greater than those who have said Allahu Akbar today!”

While those who killed Abdullah used the same words as those who celebrated his birth, only one group truly honored the greatness of God. They are the ones who get to own the term: those who live in a way that celebrates the greatness of God by obeying his commands and serving his creation, not those who flout those commands and attack his creation unjustly.

We mustn’t allow terrorists or agendas of fear to own any of the words, concepts, or devotions found in the sacred text of a quarter of the world’s population. That would give them exactly what they want. And God is far greater than the ugliness committed in His name. “Allahu Akbar…”

The Holy Bible Vs The Quran Final Debate: Important Questions For Muslim Apologists

By Albert Afeso Akanbi

If you miss any of the first 3 series in this debate, please read them using the links below

In the last four weeks, we have looked at the divine authorship claims of both the Holy Bible and the Koran. In conclusion, we shall be asking the Muslim apologists a few questions which we humbly hope they would honestly oblige us.

Surah 7:158 described Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) as “al-nabi al-ummi” i.e “the unlearned prophet”. Muslims are generally unashamed to say their prophet was an illiterate because it would imply that as an unlearned man, he had no hand in the formulation of the Koran, thereby giving it divine legitimacy.

The record however tells us that even if the prophet was acclaimed to be an illiterate, he was an astute businessman, so trusted that his first wife Khadija employed his services in her businesses. It is almost certain that a man like that would have relied heavily on the use of his mind, and as a well-travelled trader, he would have seen countless religious monuments across his routes and heard many religious stories as well.

Experts say that there were stories in circulation in Arabia, especially those told by pagan Arabians and heretic Byzantine Christians who fled the persecutions of Europe at that time, which we have seen from evidence that found their way into the Koran.

For example, in Surah 54:50 we read that the universe was created in a twinkling of an eye, in 41: 9 we read that it was created in two days, then in verse 10 and 12 we read that the ‘seven heavens’ were created in two days. It appears that after these assertions, the author of the Koran came across the Biblical story of creation and that is why in Surah 10:3 and 32:4 we read that creation happened in 6 days.

It appears that after all these stories; the compliers of the Koran bonded all these different accounts of creation together, leaving us with all these varying stories and leaving the apologists of today the task of trying to make sense of its all.

Surah 32:5, tells us a day to Allah is ‘a thousand years of your reckoning’. Then few Surahs later, in chapter 70:4 we are told that a day to Allah is 50,000 years!

Regarding Jesus Christ, Surah 3:55 say ‘surely, I will… raise thee to myself…’ That was Allah speaking of Isa -Jesus.  Confirming this, Surah 19:33 says ‘…the peace of God… shall be upon me on the day that I would die, and on the day I will be raised from the dead’ that was Jesus speaking of his own death in a manner that did not suggest he was speaking of coming to die in some far distant future as some apologists want us to believe today.

Despite this glaring and self-explanatory statements, Surah 4:157-158 tells us that Jesus did not die but that ‘…it only seemeth so in their eyes…’, i.e the Jews that killed him. Confused, some Muslims have tried to explain that Jesus would indeed come back in some distant future to taste death, but do the above words of the Koranic Jesus appear like one speaking about some future death? If so, why can’t we just get a clear verse that say so?

Everyone who crossed paths with Jesus Christ, friends and foes alike, all acknowledged his Sonship to God. And this fact is clearly recorded in all known history. However, over 600 after Jesus Christ, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) appeared and exclaimed “…how can Allah have a son when he has no wife…?” In other words, the Koran is telling us that the only way to have a son is through a wife! Yet, the same Koran tells us when Mary raised the same objection by asking how she could bear a child when no man had touched her; the Angel Gabriel said nothing was impossible for Allah to do. Yet the Prophet of Islam is telling us that what the same Koran says was possible with God was not anymore.

Here, Christians say, lays the Islamic dilemma. They say the Muslims clearly do not understand, like their misunderstanding of other Christian doctrines, the concept of the Sonship of Jesus Christ to God.

Surah 19:30 tells us Jesus preached Islam even as an infant, and we are told that Jesus preached the same message as prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Yet, from records, we know that the lives of both figures are irreconcilable opposites.

From one being a celibate to the other marrying more women than is permitted in his own religion, from one never lifting a sword to the other taking part in several wars-whether they were defensive wars or not, killing is killing, and so on, we see traits that put the two figures apart. How could they have preached the same message?

The Koran tells us Jesus Christ was an unsuccessful Islamic prophet, the question is, how could Allah who promised to protect Jesus’ message, protect him and his followers till the day of judgment allow his message to be corrupted? Even if it were true, why did Allah have to wait over 600 years to correct this corruption by revealing the Koran?

We are told that it was Allah that made it appear Jesus was crucified when in truth he had substituted a strange man for Jesus to be killed, and Surah 61: 14 tells us it was him who helped those who believe, question is, why kill an innocent man in the place of Jesus, and if it was Allah that made it appear to the Jews that they killed Jesus, why blame his disciples and Christians for believing so, and could he not be accused of being behind the distortion and by extension the so called corruption of the Bible?

If as we have seen, the Koran says the Holy Bible was given as guidance to mankind, that Jesus was born of a virgin, that he is the Spirit and Word of God, the messiah and so on, and yet we are told by the same Koran that his message was corrupted, of what importance then is all the uniqueness of the Koranic Jesus if Allah knew he would turn out an unsuccessful preacher of Islam in the end?

Christian clerics say there is deliberate denial of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ because of its implication to the Islamic theology. And this is the crux of the matter, because the Holy Bible itself says “…this is the anti-Christ, he who denies the Father and the Son…” 1 John 2:22.

Could Jesus have died without the crucifixion as was foretold? Jesus himself told us countless times in the Holy Bible that he came solely to die for the sins of man. Yet, even though the Koran denies this, from Islamists like late Ahmed Deedat to the Ahmadiya Muslims of India, we have seen various interpretations of what happened to Jesus on that first Easter night in Palestine some 2000+ years ago.

From overwhelming evidence, we know the story about Jesus not dying on the cross was borrowed from the Gospel of Barnabas written by one strange figure just immediately after the first century, a man who many experts believe to be a former Roman Catholic turns Muslim. As I pointed out in Part II, Muslims love his work so much that many Islamic authorities have had countless copies printed, especially in Pakistan.

Another reason Muslims deny the death of Christ according to some apologists is because they think it is a tragedy and an indictment on God to allow his prophet to die at the hand of sinners. Yet as I pointed out in one of my articles, the cross is not a tragedy. It is not an ending. It is not a symbol of death. It is victory; it is a beginning and symbol of the newness of life for the Christians and for all who believe. Jesus went to it willingly, knowing the implication for himself and mankind.

In any case, we are told that many of God’s messengers were ridiculed while many more were put to death, so why believe a prophet of God cannot get killed?

Then Surah 4:48 tells us that the sin of shirk, i.e worshiping any other god but Allah, is an unforgivable sin. Yet Surah 39:53 tells us that Allah forgives all sins. Does all sins include shirk? In fact, we are told that Abraham committed the sin of shirk, yet apologists say the father of Islam is Abraham, why so?

Surah 17:86 and 16:101 tells us respectively that Allah’s words can be nullified according to the Islamic Doctrine of Abrogation, even though we are told elsewhere in the same Koran that his words can never be changed.

We are told that Muslims, Christians and Jews are all worshipers of one and the same God and so will all be together in paradise , but in 3:85 we read that ‘…whoso desireth other than Islam as a religion…shall be …lost…’

Today, apologists tell us that Adam was the first Muslim even though Surah 6:14 and 163 tells us categorically that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was the very first to surrender to Allah and thus became the first Muslim.

Finally, on the most important question about the fate of man, Surah 8:29 tells us Allah will appoint man a criterion to judge between right and wrong even though the same Koran tells us man has no choice in the matter as Allah will decide what he wills. While Surah 7:8-9 tells us that going to heaven is determined by weighing a man’s deed on a scale, we read in other verses that Allah forgives whoever he wills and that one’s going to Paradise is purely on Allah’s decision.

Koran categorically and emphatically forbids worshiping objects as an ‘abomination’ and ‘Satan’s handiwork’ but we see what today’s Muslims do with the Kaaba, Mecca, where they travel miles, across the Atlantic, bow facing it in prayers and kissing the stone which historically was an object of pagan worship in pre-Islamic Arabia before Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was born. I can go on and on.

And yet the apologists want us to believe the book was dictated from a Mother Book that has existed eternally in heaven? I rest my case…

Pastor Benny Hinn ‘Faints’ After A Nigerian Sows $1 Million Into His Ministry (Video)

World renowned televangelist, Pastor Benny Hinn ‘fainted’ upon hearing a Nigerian member donated a million dollars to his ministry.

Pastor Benny Hinn and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome both partner in building a Christian network “loveworldusa” as partners have started sowing already.

During a program on the Loveworldusa, Pastor Benny Hinn couldn’t hold himself as he kept on fainting after a Nigerian sowed $1000000 into the cable network.

He did not even care about the Saudi Arabian member that donated $10,000.

Toufik Benedictus “Benny” Hinn is an Israeli televangelist, best known for his regular “Miracle Crusades”—revival meeting or faith healing summits that are usually held in stadiums in major cities.

The single fact you should know about tithes

Fola Ojo

Fola Ojo

In a few of my treatises via this medium, I have shovelled out some chastisement of the church and some of its wayward leaders. I chose the route because I believe that true men of God must stand against societal misdeeds, not promote them. They must stand to correct what ails the society and not complicate them. And they must be true and truthful and not become harborages of untruth.

There are very many pastors who deserve our salutations, however. They are men and women of impact and effective leadership. They are men who have helped raise people now impacting the society. They are men who helped nurture people like Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Femi Adesina, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity; Obiageli Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, and many men and women in political and business authorities in Nigeria and around the world. These pastors’ training sanctuaries were kept open to nurture these men and women because congregants in their folds were obedient to the instructions of God regarding tithing and giving to kingdom work.

Money and power are provocateurs of even historical skirmishes and squabbles all over the world. Anything that involves money and a man’s pocket book is a tetchy terrain to walk. Love of money intoxicates and makes men mad. Love of money kills men before their time. Humans by nature get frigidly edgy when someone attempts to take something out of their wallets. Humans by nature don’t like to give up money; they only like to receive. Morally and ethically unmoored behaviours of some men of God have explained why some voices are coming hard on pastors. Of the truth, the spiritual principles of tithing and giving have been perverted by many.

In the US, there are at least 350,000 churches and 600,000 pastors. In these churches, the principle of tithing is preached because that is how church doors remain open. Those who cry against pastors and the church paint an erroneous picture that those who are obedient to the scriptural instruction are foolish, dumb, and cuckoo.  But, we are not. Anything that has to do with God is spiritual, and natural men cannot comprehend it. Tithing is a spiritual instruction.

One of the wealthiest families that the world has ever known, the Rockefeller family, once shared this testimony by John D. Rockefeller: “Yes, I tithe, and I would like to tell you how it all came about. I had to begin work as a small boy to help support my mother. My first wages amounted to $1.50 per week. The first week after I went to work, I took the $1.50 home to my mother and she held the money in her lap and explained to me that she would be happy if I would give a tenth of it to the Lord. I did, and from that week until this day, I have tithed every dollar God has entrusted to me. And I want to say, if I had not tithed the first dollar I made, I would not have tithed the first million dollars I made.”

Rockefeller found that a strong spiritual life was crucial to an effective business life. He tithed from his first paycheck and gave to his church. By the year 1905, his tithe was $105m. By 1913, Rockefeller became the richest person in the modern history of the world. Today, after adjusting for inflation, he is still the richest person in the modern world. Wikipaedia lists his adjusted net worth at $340bn. Every family member to the fifth generation has been doubly blessed because of the faithful stewardship of their grandfather.

It is true that some pastors have taken pastoring too far into the pit of ridiculousness. In any assemblage of human beings is also an assemblage of human bad eggs. Whether they fast 365 days a year, or blast in tongues for hours unending, whether they dwell in mansions; fly in jets; cruise on yachts, and are in control of empires; men of God are men first; they are not God! A pastor may be bad; but the standard of our good God remains good; and cannot be changed. Heaven is the only spot where all things and people radiate perfection.  If you expect perfection in the church, then be prepared to go to heaven in a hurry on the next available flight. As long as God allowed Judas Iscariot to sit with Jesus Christ for almost three years, there will always be Judases in the church whose salivations are about lusting after 30 shekels of silver and the god of mammon.

In Nigeria, testimonies abound of good works done by many pastors and churches, and they cannot be rubbished.  But unfortunately, these feats are not heralded like politicians’ half-baked projects; because pastors are not seeking the approval of men; but of God. These good men whose activities have touched lives are reasons why the church keeps growing despite cries of opposing voices that want it shut down.

A few churches in Nigeria have taken over the duties of federal and state governments. Churches don’t have to build cities; yet, they did. They don’t have to build hospitals; yet, they did. They don’t have to build federal and state roads; but, they did. Churches have turned jungles and hideouts of criminals to paradise on earth. The head of my mission and his wife built a rehabilitation centre in Epe, Lagos State for youths overtaken by drug addiction. Another church in Lagos equipped 20,000 kids as they returned to school and the same church trains and equips unemployed youths in at least 11 different vocations. The training runs three times every year and must have trained about 5,000 entrepreneurs since its inception. You can call for the heads of pastors who are reckless in lifestyles; it’s in your right; but you cannot condemn God’s law of tithe; it’s not in your purview.

Attending a church is not backed by any statute or the constitution of Nigeria; it is a matter of choice. If going to church does not profit you, stop going. Paying the tithe is God’s law; if it rubs you the wrong way, don’t pay. If a pastor holds a gun to your head to give up your money, report him to the law and I will help in his prosecution. But, if you catch the revelation of tithing and giving, keep doing it. Pay day is inevitable. Pastors reading the tithing instruction to our hearings did not author the Book from where they read. Men who complain about tithing are usually men who don’t give to kingdom work nor serve God of the Bible. No matter what anyone says about tithing and giving to God’s work, men will always be moved by the invisible hands of the Giver of Life to give to men of God they LOVE and TRUST. And true, tried and trusted men of God in our midst are very, very many.

In conclusion, I express this to a pastor reading this; you cannot hold a two-hour service and talk about tithe for one hour. Something is wrong with your theology. What you coerce and bully people to do will neither profit you nor souls under your care. Giving that comes from the heart of the giver is that which will yield harvest. If money is tight for you, go get a job!  Call on the Owner of the Church who is God, and who, hopefully, has called you. If it is His Church, He will build it. If it is yours, then build it yourself. But I tell you, no one successfully builds God’s House with human tactics. God bless you, pastor.
